The essay makes a comparative study of Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre, the protagonist in Charlotte’s autobiographical novel Jane Eyre, on their life experiences, personalities, and values with the method of comparative studying, documentary. And based on the comparative study, the essay tries to explain why Charlotte Bronte declared that Jane Eyre was not herself.
By comparing Charlotte Bronte with Jane Eyre, I find that there is a lot resemblance between them in their experiences, characteristics, and values. They all underwent miserable childhoods and hard school-days, worked as governesses for a short time to make a living, experienced a love full of trouble. Although they developed a loneliness and inferiority complex, they had strong personalities and self-esteem, and pursuited freedom and equality for women through their life. However, a lot of the similar experiences were exaggerated in Jane Eyre. Compared with Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre’s suffers was more bitter; fate, luckier; personalities, more distinctive, especially her independence and rebelliousness. And there were subtle differences between the two’s attitudes towards love. Analyzing the similarities and differences between Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre we can find that Jane Eyre was not Charlotte Bronte herself in her real life but in her ideal life.
